What to Bring to Summer Basketball Day Camp

Day camp packing is simple. Here's the list we share with RCE families — and a few of the small things parents forget.

The basics

  • Athletic shoes: basketball shoes if you have them, athletic shoes if you don't. No open-toe shoes, no crocs.
  • Athletic clothes: shorts and a t-shirt. Light colors breathe better in the Alabama summer.
  • Water bottle: labeled, refillable. The single most important item.
  • Snack: a small, non-perishable snack for the break. Granola bars, fruit snacks, crackers.

Weather and sun

  • Sunscreen: apply before drop-off. Send a small bottle if your child can reapply.
  • Hat or visor: optional but helpful.
  • Light layer: for air-conditioned indoor portions on hot days.

Optional but helpful

  • Extra socks: a clean pair in the bag. Wet feet are no fun.
  • Towel: for water breaks on hot days.
  • Small towel or wristband: for sweat.
  • Bags: a labeled backpack or drawstring bag so nothing gets left behind.

What not to bring

  • Electronics (phones, tablets, game devices).
  • Jewelry or watches that could get damaged.
  • Anything valuable or sentimental.
  • Glass containers.

Label everything

This is the boring tip that pays off: label the water bottle, the bag, the shoes, and any item that could be lost. Most "lost" items at camp are not lost — they're just unclaimed. A label makes the return trip faster.

The first-day drop-off

On the first day, plan to arrive a few minutes early. The check-in process is faster when you're not rushing, and your child will feel more settled walking in with a calm start.
